How Many Sets and Reps Should You Do?

There is no universal set-and-rep prescription. There are useful ranges — and a way to choose them based on your goal and recovery.

If your goal is strength on a lift, lower reps with heavier loads tend to work well — often 3 to 6 reps for main compounds. For muscle growth, a wider range works: roughly 6 to 15 reps, provided sets are taken close enough to failure and weekly volume is sufficient.

Sets matter as much as reps. One hard set is rarely enough for most people. Two to four quality working sets per exercise is a common starting point. More advanced lifters may need more weekly volume spread across sessions.

Do not copy a program and ignore recovery. If performance drops for several sessions, volume or intensity may be too high. If nothing is getting harder for weeks, you may be leaving too much in reserve.

A workout log helps you stop debating theory and start observing your response. Write down the plan, then write down what you completed. Adjust from evidence.

LiftLog routines let you keep set and rep targets consistent across weeks while still adjusting load set by set.
